Migraine headaches have been around forever. Recently a published report has shown the effectiveness of acupuncture for the treatment of chronic headaches, especially the migraine type. This research paper found that over a 12-month period, headache patients that received regular acupuncture sessions reported fewer headaches and reduced severity of the headaches.
The most important part of this research indicated that chronic headaches require treatment over a longer period of time. It also proved that over the same year of treatment that the frequency average was reduced by an average of 22 fewer days of headaches per year. The acupuncture patients also used 15 percent less medication to treat headaches, missed fewer days of work and had 256 percent fewer visits to the general practitioner’s office.
Headache patients know how much pain, agony and lack of enjoyment of life activities they endure during these episodes. Acupuncture along with usual standards in care results in clinical benefits for those with chronic headaches. I always go right back to quality of life and the decrease in medication is of utmost importance. Headaches result in patients primarily feeling “bombed” for a day or so and then the “hang-over” type feeling for another day or so. The productivity level of these patients goes down considerably for several days following the headache.
Headaches have been successfully treated with chiropractic as well. Specific chiropractic adjustments can restore the proper range of motion as well as removing nerve interference. Relaxing the muscle and ligamentous tissues is also an essential part of a satisfactory outcome to the chronic headache scenario. The nervous system can be evaluated by your doctor of chiropractic. The examination and treatment is very important in order to determine the cause of the headache or pain syndrome. Maintaining this correction will also be a mainstay in the positive outcome of managing chronic headaches.
Be careful when you are around people who wear too much perfume. Strong odors can be not only offensive but can actually trigger a headache. So for those of you that feel you need to take a bath in your perfume or cologne — Knock it off! It may smell fine to you, but you’re making the rest of us sick!
Acupuncture and chiropractic should be utilized as mainstream treatment for the chronic headaches syndromes. It should be made available in primary care to treat pain and prevent costly referrals to hospitals and emergency rooms.
May God bless America and protect our troops. Yours in good health!
